Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Ali al-Hakim on Friday urged Arab countries to adopt a food security plan to protect their people from the dangers of hunger, stressing the proposal to connect the electrical grid between his country, Jordan and Egypt.
"My government stresses the importance of food security as one of the pillars of security and stability in our Arab region and believes that it is necessary to adopt an Arab integration plan aimed at the Arab citizens and focus on providing and protecting Arab food security," Hakim said in a speech at a meeting of Arab foreign and economic ministers held in Beirut. To a world free of poverty, hunger, disease and destitution, as well as the implementation of appropriate social protection systems and measures for all ".
He added that the Iraqi government believes that the Arab strategy for sustainable energy 2014 to 2030, is one of the important pillars of sustainable development and upgrading the level of Arab citizens economically and socially and in connection with the project of the Arab market for electricity, my government has made a proposal linking Iraq, Many of the benefits and social and economic benefits of the Arab citizen, and Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of the Arab common market for electricity in April 2017.
Al-Hakim said that "tourism is the cornerstone for introducing the varied Arab cultural heritage that the Arab citizen is proud of. It requires all of us to move to find common ground for the development and promotion of inter-tourism in order to preserve and invest this in order to achieve great economic development."
He said that the problem of refugees began to overshadow the host countries and constitute a human concern to be consumed. Iraq therefore proposes to implement a number of development projects in the host countries, including Lebanon and Jordan to contribute to financing and providing support to these projects in order to alleviate the economic and social burden on these countries.
Al-Hakim noted that "in dealing with the scourge of poverty, which is strikingly hitting a number of our Arab countries, especially those suffering from armed conflicts, Iraq participated in the meetings of the group on the preparation of the Arab Strategic Framework for Poverty Eradication, To draw a development plan for the years 2018 to 2022 aims to reach a growth rate of 7%, and Iraq is seeking to reduce the poverty rate significantly by 2030, through the development of a plan in the light of the goals of sustainable development 2030.
He added that "Arab cooperation in various fields such as electricity, railways, land and sea trade and air transport should be facilitated in order to facilitate the movement of goods and goods between Arab countries and lift trade barriers."
Al-Hakim called for "strengthening the Arab regional integration in the field of foreign trade, especially the Greater Arab Trade Zone, and developing the methods of production and marketing of Arab products and making them competitive in the global market, thus facilitating their integration into global value chains."
