Economists believe that the Ukraine war paved the way for traders to speculate in basic commodities (flour, sugar and oils), and that the factors that are being promoted as reasons led to higher prices in Iraq.
"The country's current purchases of wheat are sufficient for two months," said Haydar Nuri, Director General of the General Company for Grain Trade at the Ministry of Commerce, adding that "the local consumption of wheat reaches 460,000 tons per month."
And Baghdad took a package of decisions to achieve food security and confront the rise in food commodity prices as a result of the economic repercussions of the Ukrainian crisis.
And the government announced, "the launch of two food rations on the ration card, launching campaigns to control prices in the markets, and taking legal measures against violators."
The economic advisor, Mustafa Al-Bazarkan, denounced the lack of abundance and emergency stocks to face any crisis or unusual increase in demand.
Al-Bazarkan gave an example of “strategic storage of wheat or grain, as well as of the required food commodities.” Stressing that "Iraq does not have a strategic plan to ensure food security."
The advisor explains that “the war in Ukraine is a reason for speculation by raising the prices of basic commodities (flour, sugar and oils), and the reasons he promotes for the price hike in Iraq are flimsy reasons because the country does not import wheat from Ukraine and Russia, but rather it depends on wheat imported from Australia and Canada.” and the United States of America.”
In conclusion, he recalls that the International Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) defines food security as “providing food for all members of society in the quantity and quality necessary to meet their needs on an ongoing basis for a healthy and active life.
