BAGHDAD / The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament's Legal Committee, Bahar Mahmud, has expressed concerns about the enactment of the Family Violence Act, which guarantees the rights of men, women and children.
"There is a real desire to enact a law against domestic violence despite fears that it is not accepted by society, especially since our Iraqi society consists of religious, sectarian and national pluralism, but this does not prevent a response and enthusiasm in the enactment of the law," Mahmoud said in a statement.
She added that "after the rise of the phenomenon of domestic violence in society, the enactment of such a law has become necessary, and for the response of society to the law and acceptance must be prepared by educating the community this law and this is the duties of civil society organizations and all other concerned parties because social acceptance of the law the most important condition For ease of implementation or application. "
She added that "this law in order to achieve its objectives on the ground should not be a conflict between him and other laws," adding: "As article 41 of the Iraqi Penal Code No. 111 of 1969, which allows the husband to discipline his wife inconsistent with this law, To articles 376 to 385 which must be reviewed at the enactment of this Act, as well as some articles of the Personal Status Act. "
A member of the legal committee said that "this law is not for the benefit of women alone, despite the fact that most of those who are subjected to violence are women, ie 85%, but at the same time there are men subjected to domestic violence and the law guarantees their rights as well as children and all other family members."
