Al-Bayati reveals a "catastrophic error" in the local elections law

Former lawmaker Jassem Mohammed al-Bayati on Saturday revealed a "catastrophic error" in the local elections law, pointing out that the text of the current law obliges the commission to scrutinize the electoral register after the elections, contrary to the text of the official law.
"The Presidency of the House of Representatives is obliged to make special amendments to the law and correct the catastrophic typographical error on the Commission's commitment to elections and the government to scrutinize the voter register before the elections and not after," Bayati said in a statement.
He added that "the text of the new law refers to the audit in 2020, while the agreement and passing the law on the wording of the audit before the elections in 2019 and under the supervision of the federal government."
"The audit of the voter register will remove more than 400,000 Kurdish citizens from the voter register because the Kurdish parties registered areas outside Kirkuk within the province such as the district of Tuz, Chamchamal, Jabbara and Kifri," he said.
