US Navy announces successful test of anti-ship missile
The US Pacific Fleet has successfully tested an anti-ship NMS missile in the coastal waters of Guam.
"The USS Independence Coastal Combat Ship, Gabriel Giffords, successfully demonstrated the capabilities of the NSM missile on 1 October during Pacific Griffin maneuvers," the fleet said in a statement.
"I am very proud of our collective work, which led to the successful launch of the NSM," said US Navy Commander Matthew Lehmann.
According to the statement, this is the first launch of such a missile in the Indian Pacific.
The NMS anti-ship missile is a high-precision, long-range weapon that can locate and destroy enemy ships 100 nautical miles (185 km). The missile flies at very low altitudes above sea level, and has the ability to track terrain.
