IRBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Saturday expressed concern about the growing violence between demonstrators and security forces across Iraq.
"Civilian casualties and the increasing number of casualties in ongoing demonstrations across the country and the use of firearms to restore public order are matters of concern," it said in a statement.
"The use of force is an exceptional measure that must be commensurate with the current situation," said the ICRC's head of delegation in Iraq, Katarina Ritz. "The security forces may use firearms and live ammunition only when absolutely necessary, with the aim of protecting against an imminent threat to life."
The ICRC called on all to "exercise restraint while monitoring developments on the ground".
"The ICRC teams are also in contact with the health authorities, and yesterday they delivered medical supplies to Sheikh Zayed Hospital in central Baghdad to treat at least 100 wounded," he said.
