"The United States will hold the Iranian regime directly responsible for the death of any American there. Our response will be decisive," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday in a statement.
He added: "Reports of the spread of the Corona virus (Covid-19) in Iranian prisons are worrying, and the least they require is the full and immediate release of all US citizens" there.
He continued, "Their detention amid increasingly deteriorating conditions contradicts basic human fitness."
A UN reporter strongly criticized the way in which the Iranian authorities dealt with the crisis of the Coronavirus, especially Tehran's decision to temporarily release 70,000 prisoners, saying that this measure came "very late" and the number of those released was "very few". "The situation with regard to the Corona virus in Iran is very disturbing," Javed Rehman, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, told a news conference in Geneva.
And Tehran announced on Tuesday, 54 deaths due to infection with the Corona virus during the past 24 hours, in the highest toll in one day since the emergence of the Corona epidemic in the country.
