He urged the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, the designated Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, to resolve differences with the Sunni and Kurdish blocs over the formation of his government.
A statement by the US embassy in Baghdad stated that "Pompeo telephoned Allawi to reaffirm the permanent commitment of the United States of America to a strong, prosperous, and sovereign Iraq."
According to the statement, "The US Secretary of State welcomed the prime minister's pledge to hold early elections in order to support the democratic system in Iraq."
For his part, Pompeo urged the Iraqi Prime Minister-designate to resolve differences with Kurdish and Sunni political leaders to ensure that his government succeeded in carrying out the basic tasks.
The US Secretary of State stressed the need for Iraq to commit to protecting US diplomats, coalition forces, and their facilities.
