The Ministry of Transport is negotiating to complete a contract concluded since 2013 for the purchase of two ships to be added to the country's fleet consisting of 6 ships, while the construction and rehabilitation works of three berths at Umm Qasr Al Janoubi port have been completed.
The director of the General Company for Ports of Iraq affiliated to the Ministry, Farhan Muhaisin Al-Fartousi, said in a press statement, “The ministry, because of the small number of ships it owns and its dependence on the lessee, is negotiating to complete a contract to purchase two ships after fulfilling all of its requirements, explaining that the year 2013 was concluded. However, it has not yet been implemented. "
In 2012, the Ministry announced its contract with a Korean company to manufacture two large ships, Basra and Ur, each with a tonnage of 17,000 tons, bringing the number of ships within the country's fleet to eight ships by the year 2014.
It is noteworthy that “Iraq used to own a fleet of 24 ships, of which only one vessel was left after 2003, namely (Al-Nasser), which he bought in 1989 and is still in service.
On his side, Director of Umm Qasr Al Janoubi Port, Muthanna Jabbar Jassim, stated that “three berths were rehabilitated and completed at Umm Qasr South Port, which are 4, 6 and 7, which took place in parallel with the unloading and shipping operations, and a good rate of revenue was achieved for the farmers.”
He noted "the existence of business expansion in infrastructure and rehabilitation at the entrance and methods of the ports of Umm Qasr, in addition to the expansion of the squares that have contributed significantly to achieving the smooth flow of the graduation of the goods and to facilitate the entry of trucks, speed testing and achievement in directing customs, as well as the operations of mooring and departure, handling and graduation of goods and procedures Administrative and financial related to this work.
Currently, Iraq relies on renting tankers of different nationalities to transport imported goods for the benefit of state institutions, in addition to other tankers that handle the shipping of oil exported from the fields of the south.
And Iraq has in Basra Governorate (south) 4 commercial and industrial ports, which are “Al Maqal”, “Khuz Al Zubair”, “Abu Flus” and “Umm Qasr”.
