    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

Today, Monday, the Ministry of Agriculture announced the inclusion of 6 million dunams in the irrigation plan, indicating that there are 26 million dunums of arable land, of which only 6 dunums have been used due to water scarcity, stressing that Iraq is still dependent on the old irrigation methods since the fifties of the last century, and with this The cultivated land is estimated at only 23% of the total arable area.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Hamid Al-Nayef, said that “the agricultural plan last year was based on more than 14 million dunams, including 9 million dunams in the field of strategic crops of barley, wheat and vegetables, as production reached 5 million tons of grain and 400 thousand tons of seeds.”
He added that "the lack of rain last year negatively affected the agricultural plan, especially the production of wheat, as production reached three and a half million tons only," noting that "the bloody areas were not cultivated due to the scarcity of water."
He pointed out that "an agricultural plan has been prepared during the current year that depends on the dam and artesian areas, lakes and rivers, but the irrigation plan includes only 6 million dunams, and the rest of the plan depends on rain, which is up to 9 million dunams."
And he indicated that "there is a decline in the cultivation of lands, in addition to the existence of a law that prevents any farmer from cultivating outside the plan set by the ministry."
He pointed out that "the areas that were approved in the agricultural plan have reserved their water share, and he will not receive any rights in the event of any violation of his crops."
He stated that "there are 26 million dunams suitable for agriculture, and only 6 million of them have been cultivated due to water scarcity."
He added, "The countries of the world have moved towards modern irrigation methods, including covering rivers with concrete and coated pipes, to prevent evaporation, prevent water from seeping into the ground, and prevent salinity."
He noted that “the irrigation methods in Iraq are still old from the fifties of the last century, and there are rare projects that use modern methods, as the methods of drip and spraying are only in the greenhouses,” noting that “the methods of irrigation with sprinklers exist, but there is no factory in Iraq for the manufacture of sprinklers, and it is difficult Importing it from abroad, because of the lack of money.”
He explained that "the Ministry of Commerce worked to buy 3 and a half million tons in order to supply it, as well as it bought rice from the Ministry of Agriculture, as for the barley and yellow corn crops, it disposes of it under the Ministry's hands."
He pointed out that “the Ministry of Water Resources digs wells within the required contexts, and some of them contain water suitable for irrigation, and others are saline water,” explaining that “the governorates of Muthanna, Najaf and Karbala relied on the irrigation of some projects on artesian wells, and it is not possible to rely entirely on wells because they are storage.” for future generations.”
Al-Nayef stressed, "the importance of Iraq getting its water dues from the Turkish side, so that the cultivation process can take place."
And he indicated that "the Ministry of Agriculture is one of the important ministries, as it represents 60% of the Iraqi people, which is the rural community, and in the event of the advancement of this sector, the Iraqi economy, trade and industry will rise and revenues will increase."
He pointed out that “the agricultural initiative has turned into loan funds, and the Agricultural Bank, which is at the disposal of the Ministry of Finance, still has not recovered the amounts from it, as 250 billion dinars have been allocated within the lending fund, and we hope that this amount will be under the Ministry’s command in the year 2022 and the dues will be distributed to farmers and peasants.” .
