The Najaf Agriculture Directorate revealed that there are 14 million dunums of unused or reclaimed desert lands, despite their cultivability and high productivity, especially in the field of grains, which are the mainstay of food security, in addition to their environmental benefits.
The province of Najaf suffers throughout the year due to the dust and dust that covers its atmosphere, due to the vastness of the desert areas that surround it and the lack of vegetation cover, which recedes year after year due to the encroachment on agricultural lands, and the lack of reclaimed ones relative to its area
     the college.
The Director General of Najaf Agriculture, Munim Shahid Al-Fatlawi, said: “The area of arable desert lands in the governorate is close to 14 million dunams, while the cultivated area does not exceed 50,000 dunams, while the cultivable clay lands reach 700,000 dunums, 500,000 dunams of which have been cultivated.” .
Al-Fatlawi attributed the reason for not cultivating desert lands to “being sandy land, which needs to use chemical and organic fertilizers to compensate for the shortage in its elements, and it also needs to dig wells because it depends on groundwater as a source of irrigation, with the use of modern irrigation technologies such as sprinklers.
