The Ministry of Agriculture announced the success in reclaiming 4 million dunums of desert land, while revealing the introduction of 3 million dunums into the wheat cultivation plan this year and increasing the area of land cultivated with milkshakes.
Ministry spokesman Muhammad Al-Khuzaie said, “Four million dunums of desert land have been reclaimed for agriculture, using sprinklers and groundwater for the winter season of wheat cultivation.”
He added, “The agricultural areas for wheat cultivation that depend on river water are estimated at one and a half million dunums, while the agricultural areas that depend on rainwater, which are called Dimiya and semi-Dimiya lands and included in the agricultural plan, are estimated at two and a half million dunums.”
He added, “With regard to lands cultivated with wheat, three million dunums were introduced that were outside the plan, bringing the size of the areas cultivated with the crop to 11 million dunums.”
Al-Khuzaie stressed that “the current year’s situation is better than last year with regard to the wheat crop, and the areas cultivated with the Shallot crop also increased as a result of the improvement in the water situation from five thousand dunums last year to 150 thousand dunums for this season, with 80 thousand dunums for Najaf Governorate and 50 thousand dunums for Diwaniyah Governorate and the rest of the areas.” It was distributed among the governorates of Muthanna, Babil, Dhi Qar and Maysan.”
He pointed out that “the improvement in the water situation came thanks to the government’s successful measures and negotiations, as the flows of the Tigris River through the Turkish side increased, and rainfall amounts were invested in nourishing additional lands this year, which contributed to increasing water shares.”
