On Saturday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein expressed deep concern over the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, the Ukrainian refugee crisis and the spillover of the effects of the war on the entire world, including the Middle East.
A statement to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "Minister Hussein received the G7 ambassadors accredited to Iraq, in the presence of the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Legal Affairs, Qahtan Taha Khalaf, and the Undersecretary for Administrative and Technical Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed Barwari, and during the meeting, the details and dimensions of the Minister's expected visit to Moscow were reviewed. Warshaw is part of the Arab Contact Group at the ministerial level of the League of Arab States to follow up and conduct the necessary consultations and contacts with the parties concerned with the Russian-Ukrainian crisis with the aim of contributing to finding diplomatic solutions to the crisis and ending the ongoing war.
Hussein stressed, “Iraq’s keenness to end the war as soon as possible,” noting that “Iraq’s position in taking neutrality is in line with the provisions of the Iraqi constitution, and it does not mean standing with one side against another, as Iraq is one of the countries that has suffered from wars throughout the past decades. The Iraqi people have suffered from wars, sieges and boycotts, so Iraq is against any war and armed conflict between countries.”
The Iraqi minister stressed the importance of respecting the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations and supporting efforts aimed at ending tension and encouraging all mediation efforts in this context, explaining that the Arab League initiative aims to listen to all relevant parties and exchange views in order to reach a solution that aims to truce, restraint, and a cease-fire, in a manner that ensures the return of stability and an end to the existing humanitarian crisis, expressing deep concern over the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, the Ukrainian refugee crisis and the spillover of the effects of the war on the entire world, including the Middle East.
For their part, the ambassadors of the accredited countries thanked the Arab initiative and Iraq's efforts within this framework to end the current conflict and end the crisis through diplomatic solutions. The meeting was attended by the ambassadors of Germany, which chairs the current session of the G7, the United States of America, Japan, France, Italy, Britain and Canada.
