Government officials confirmed that the first phase of the construction of Al-Faw port is progressing at an increasing pace, noting that five berths will be ready to receive ships in 2024, while they talked about new operations currently underway to prepare the seabed for paving with rocks, after completing an important road used by trucks.
The Director General of the General Ports Company, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said that "one of the three major Faw port projects that was signed in 2019 and started a year later, it was officially received and opened for the purpose of pilot examination."
Al-Fartousi continued, "The project is a 14-km-long road that extends to the 63-km-long international road, which will connect Al-Faw port with the international road to Iraq at the Safwan border port."
He pointed out that "the new road is of great importance as it includes a group of internal roads in the shape of a letter (U) linking the berths near the eastern breakwater with the berths near the western breakwater with two roads that converge towards the strategic line."
And Al-Fartousi stated, "The road that has been completed has another complementary part within the projects, and there is another road that links the new projects with what has been accomplished."
And he stated, "The tunnel basin is another project that was completed a while ago, and only the rocky dam project remains, which is overlapping with the container yard and the five berths, and when it is completed, we will announce it officially."
And Al-Fartousi stated, “The implementation of the payment involves an overlap in the operations, and it requires carefulness to complete the final designs or match the final designs of (Daewoo) with those of the Italian company (Tinkcal) so that we have a plan in implementation despite our reaching advanced stages, but the plans are working on updated.”
He pointed out, "The rocky payment has been prepared in order to complete the container yard, because we work openly on the sea, and this requires setting limits in order to limit the work to one place, and through the payment, the container yard is determined."
Al-Fartousi continues, "The container yard extends to 1750 m and a depth of 500 m, and it will be filled with rocks to establish the project."
And he added, "The facade of this yard includes the implementation of the five berths project with a length of 1,750 m, and we have reached advanced stages after the completion of the excavation with a depth of 22 m, a length of 185 m, with an extension into the sea of 200 m."
Al-Fartousi went on to "start new operations represented by introducing the material (space) in order to prepare the seabed for paving with rocky blocks, and then start the operations of hammering the pillars."
For his part, Minister of Transport Nasser Al-Shibli stated, "The road that was announced to be opened is very important as it connects to the five berths and facilitates the work of trucks for the purpose of burial, with only 3.5 km remaining, and we have reached advanced stages."
Al-Shibli added, "The road leading to the submerged tunnel reached 24 km, which constitutes 50% of its distance."
He pointed out that "the work as a whole is much advanced compared to what was included in the contract signed with the implementing agency."
Al-Shibli stressed, "the importance of working in the great port of Faw and the five projects that are being worked on at an increasing pace, and what it will achieve in terms of a large financial return that will benefit and employ a large number of manpower."
In addition, MP Alaa Al-Rikabi, who visited the port site as part of a parliamentary delegation, stated that "our oversight functions give us the right to follow up on the percentage of work completion at the Faw port, and the deputies will conduct field visits to follow up on the project's stages."
Al-Rikabi continued, "The officials informed us that the first phase will be completed in 2024, which includes 5 berths in order to be ready to receive ships, out of the 90 berths included in the project."
The large Al-Faw project is one of the projects that signed contracts with the Ministry of Transport, the General Company for Iraqi Ports, and began implementation, and now it has reached advanced stages of completion, and that it will provide between (10-1) thousand job opportunities for the unemployed.
