The Ministry of Agriculture revealed, on Saturday, that Iraq has lost nearly two million acres of vegetation cover during the past ten years, stressing the urgent need to create a fund to combat desertification afflicted by a large proportion of its lands .
The Director-General of the Department of Forestry and Combating Desertification in the Ministry, Rawya Mezal Mahmoud, said in a statement reported by the official "Al-Sabah" newspaper, "Iraq has lost, during the past ten years, one million and 747 thousand acres of green vegetation, which has turned into degraded lands and affected the agricultural plan ."
Mahmoud added, "The United Nations has linked desertification to achieving food security and its dependence on water and environmental security," noting that "Iraq needs joint cooperation from the concerned authorities, and the allocation of large sums commensurate with the size of the desertification problem, which is linked to the country's investment plans," stressing the urgent need to the creation of a fund to combat desertification afflicting a large proportion of the country's lands ."
After 2003, the Ministry of Agriculture created the Public Authority to Combat Desertification within its formations, and it allocated large budgets to it and achieved good results, but it was abolished in 2013, for unknown reasons. Mahmoud pointed out to "the need for all projects for financial allocations and joint cooperation to provide water for the development of vegetation cover using regulated irrigation techniques," revealing that "35 oases have been lost in the western region as a result of terrorism that completely destroyed them, and there are plans to restore life to 11 of them insured, with the support of From the United Nations Development Program and in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Anbar Governorate .
Regarding the problems and obstacles faced by the department, she explained that "the most important of which is the encroachment on forests and the excessive cutting and removal of them, due to the lack of deterrent penalties, in addition to the neglect of some nurseries producing drought-tolerant trees," noting that "work is underway to rehabilitate the department's nurseries in order to produce millions of suitable forest trees ".
In the same context, the Director of the Department of Forestry and Combating Desertification stressed, "the need for large financial allocations to enable them to establish a large number of forests in Baghdad and the provinces in order to maintain the ecological balance within the strategies prepared by the Ministry for this, in order to ensure the restoration of vegetation cover in the country."
