Shafaq News/ Water scarcity and a drought sweeping Iraq, its repercussions did not stop at the decline of agricultural lands seriously, but they are now threatening the aquatic and amphibious biodiversity, and here the numbers of buffaloes are declining in many areas that are famous for their breeding due to the decrease in water levels in rivers and marshes And swamps that are no longer suitable for swimming these animals.
Shafaq News Agency surveyed the opinions of buffalo breeders and those concerned with this matter to find out the reality of this environmental and economic crisis at the same time, which has become a real danger for which the government and the concerned authorities have not provided any solutions.
Umm Narjis, a mother of five boys and a girl, who lives on the outskirts of Al Hamza Al Sharqi district in Al Diwaniyah Governorate, was forced to sell her three buffaloes due to the scarcity of water. A buffalo that needs deep water to submerge its body in?
successive crises
Jassim al-Asadi, a consultant engineer at Nature Iraq, explains that "buffalo breeders lose from 15% to 25% of the animal's price due to this drought, as their prices dropped to one and a half million Iraqi dinars after the price of one animal was four million dinars."
He points out that "buffalo breeders in the provinces and marshes of Iraq are facing another dilemma after the drought that started since 2018, as water levels began to gradually decline until they reached low levels in the Chabayish marshes in Dhi Qar Governorate, as well as in the Hammar Marsh."
Al-Asadi notes that "the water drop has reached less than 90 cm at sea level, while only some deep lakes and water channels remain in the marshlands, which are shallow marshes."
He stressed that "there are villages that suffer constantly, such as the village of (Hajsa Hallab) from severe drought accompanied by a lack of support with fodder, whose value has increased from 300,000 Iraqi dinars to 700,000 dinars."
Concerning the water extensions and their ratios, Al-Asadi said, “Thermal evaporation also took its toll from Iraqi waters, where we lose an average of 1-2 cm of water, while water releases at the borders of the Muthanna and Dhi Qar governorates reach less than 60 cubic meters per second and in the village of (Abu Zerg). It reached a meter and a half, and in Al-Hawizeh Marsh only four meters out of 30 cubic metres, which forces the Ministry of Water Resources to move towards establishing lakes for raising buffaloes and providing concentrated, subsidized feed and attention to medicine as well.
Economic repercussions
A spokesman for the Minister of Agriculture, Hadi al-Yasiri, stated that "the drought and buffalo breeding have a close relationship, as livestock in Iraq, especially this animal, is greatly affected by the drying up of water bodies, which is the original home of buffalo breeding."
He explained that "the ministry took the initiative to provide dry fodder and fodder seeds for cultivation in order to support the farmer and encourage him to keep his animals and land, in addition to coordinating international support to protect buffaloes from damage that might be caused to him by drought."
As for the economic researcher, Ahmed Eid, he confirms that “livestock production is one of the most important pillars of the economy in countries that have the ingredients for raising livestock and poultry, because of its economic importance to meet the basic needs of the Iraqi family, but the level of livestock production in Iraq does not meet The local need, due to the bad economic policy that Iraq witnessed after 2003.”
He continued, "This production has decreased significantly due to several factors, including natural and human, as for the natural factors represented by drought, lack of water flow and low level of fodder cultivation, and as for humanity, it is represented by successive governments ignoring this vital and important sector, from lack of support and not giving real opportunities for local production, The level of import increased.
He pointed out that "one of the most important problems faced and still facing buffalo breeding in Iraq is the high prices of feed and the lack of support, which poses a real danger to livestock in general and buffaloes in particular, in addition to the migration of breeders to the city, as many of them abandoned the fields and marshes and headed for To live in the city, because they were unable to continue their work as a result of the heavy losses they had suffered.”
Eid concluded by saying, "The state must fulfill its obligations through what it announced in the Emergency Support Law for Food Security and Development, support the livestock sector, and strengthen the Iraqi national economy with the revenues of this important sector."
