Specialists believe that one of the advantages of Iraq's geographical location is that it resembles the bottom of a cone in the Middle East, which means that groundwater seeps into the ground to settle under the Mesopotamia Valley, forming enormous wealth waiting to be invested in the best way.
Iraq suffers from a decline in the level of water imports from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which constitute the lifeblood of its life, which has led to the decline of agricultural lands, increased desertification, and a high rate of migration from the countryside to the city.
The Ministry of Water Resources looks with interest at this wealth stored underground, and is working to implement a plan that ensures optimal and better use away from extravagance and waste.
The ministry’s spokesman, Khaled Shamal, told “Al-Sabah”: “Iraq has a huge reserve of groundwater present in all governorates, in different proportions, depths, and types.” He added, “The ministry manages this file through the Groundwater Authority, and we have specialists concerned with geology, water, and the environment.” And the layers of the earth and the rest of the supporting specialties,” stressing that “groundwater is promising and is an important reservoir for future generations and is resorted to to compensate for the shortage of surface resources.”
He continued: “The Ground Water Authority has drilled many wells in recent years for the purpose of providing fresh water for agriculture and others,” and pointed out “the importance of regulated use that is linked to the lack of surface water,” and revealed “developing a plan to invest, enhance and preserve groundwater, including completing The final topographical map that includes all the details.
Shamal concluded by saying: “The plan aims to enhance the optimal management of groundwater, allowing the use of a regulated portion of it.”
Iraq is the fifth country most affected by global warming, according to United Nations reports, which prompted the government to take urgent measures, including increasing green spaces and rationalizing water consumption.
Environmental expert Thaer Youssef criticized the old irrigation methods that no longer keep pace with developments in the field of agriculture.
Youssef told Al-Sabah: “All countries in the world obtain water from two sources: The first is water releases and the second is from harvesting rainwater and floods.” He added, “We in Iraq do not have any accounts or program for harvesting water, so we rely on releases only,” warning that “what has made the situation worse is that most irrigation operations are carried out by old traditional methods with the torrent system.” “.
He added, “The countries of the developed world are irrigating with sprinklers, distillation, and artificial rain, the latest of which is the Dragon Line system, which is developing the old pivots by adding a distillation system to them.” He called for “setting up a program for water harvesting and benefiting from it, developing irrigation systems, and relying on a closed system for fish farming instead of ponds.” clay,” stressing that “all of this puts us on the right path.”
