Baghdad / Obelisk: Russia revealed, 07/16/2022, the practices of the international coalition led by the United States in Iraq, which resulted in Iraq losing many of its heritage sites, destroying its infrastructure and inflicting heavy human losses.
The adviser to the Russian mission to the United Nations, Sergey Leonidchenko, said during an informal session of the UN Security Council that the actions of the coalition had not only led to the destruction of infrastructure and the very large number of human casualties among the civilian population.
"Cities like Mosul have been wiped off the face of the earth, and religious and cultural buildings have been reduced to rubble," he added. Tens of thousands of artifacts were looted, and they appeared in private collections in Western countries.
He added that in the year 2021 alone, Iraq recovered about 18,000 of those pieces, most of them from the United States and Britain, as well as from the Netherlands, Italy and Japan, and how many pieces remained in the special collections... We can only weight.
He indicated that a similar situation was repeated in Syria, where a number of cities were bombed, including Raqqa, and that there was no mercy towards the cultural and religious sites that were completely destroyed.
He pointed out that Britain participated in all the military adventures of NATO with the United States, and contributed to the destruction of civilian sites, including cultural ones.
He also recalled that Poland is demolishing Soviet memorials to Soviet warriors who fought Nazi Germany during World War II.
This came during an informal session of the UN Security Council, called by Poland and Albania, to discuss the destruction of cultural heritage during the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
