Journalist: Sajjad Shankali
The amount signed, which will be provided as a grant to Iraq in excess of US$10 million, will help fund a climate change mitigation project in the south of the country, implemented by FAO to build resilience to climate change. disadvantaged farming families in the region.
Journalist Sajjad Shankali quoted the Swedish ambassador to Iraq Jessica Svardström on Thursday (November 17, 2022) as saying: “Iraq is one of the countries most affected by climate change, and therefore the Swedish government has obligations towards Iraq and its assistance in mitigating these negative effects of climate change .”
This work will be accomplished by promoting climate and water smart management and good agricultural practices in selected value chains. Agriculture in Iraq faces water availability constraints that are expected to worsen over time.
For his part, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture in Iraq, Mithaq Al-Khafaji, said that the Swedish grant amounting to 10.2 million dollars “will be used to target some special projects in the central and southern regions.”
He added, “This does not mean that all of this is owned by the Ministry of Agriculture, because there are several programs with other supporting ministries, including the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and other supporting ministries, all of which work to translate the adaptation of the program in order to accommodate the severe impact of climate change or reduce it relatively.” .”
According to the signature between Iraq and Sweden, the project is designed to respond to these challenges and to enhance the resilience of farming communities to climate by increasing and stabilizing water availability at the farm gate, while improving agricultural and water productivity, in addition to reducing the adaptation deficit of farming communities.
