After the recent attack on the International Coalition base in the Al-Tanf region in eastern Syria, late last month, the United States demanded that Iraq control the pro-Iranian factions after it was convinced that the attack was carried out with 3 marches launched from Iraq, according to Al-Arabiya sources funded by Saudi Arabia.

The channel’s sources made it clear (February 4, 2023) that a faction loyal to Iran launched those three marches, and that Washington had informed Baghdad of the need to prevent the armed factions from carrying out similar operations against the coalition forces, whether in Syria or Iraq.

She also pointed out that US President Joe Biden discussed the attack on his forces in Syria during a phone call to Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, and they agreed that Iraq should not be used as a springboard to attack its neighbors, or as a springboard to target coalition forces.

And the US Central Command announced on January 20 that 3 drones targeted the Al-Tanf base, without causing any casualties among the American soldiers. She explained at the time that two drones were shot down, while the third one hit the compound.

It is noteworthy that this targeting was the first of its kind during the current year (2023), and it is also the first in more than 5 months.

About 15,000 fighters from the Iranian forces and groups loyal to them are deployed between the Iraqi-Syrian borders, and their presence is concentrated in the area extending between the cities of Al-Bukamal and the Syrian Al-Mayadeen, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
