Since the earthquake occurred in Turkey and Syria, the Iraqi street has taken the file of the collapse of Turkish dams and the ability of their Iraqi counterpart to absorb, a rich material for discussion, but went to exaggeration and exaggeration in many issues, and the Ministry of Water Resources settled this matter through assurances of the ability of the country's dams to absorb any quantities From the water it may come from the Turkish dams, denying at the same time what was circulated on the communication pages and some satellite channels of materials that depict the release of large quantities of water from the Turkish side.
The Director General of Dams, Ali Radhi, stated in an interview with Al-Sabah that “the water storage in the dams is not high,” and that “our dams are able to absorb any quantities of water that may come to us from the Turkish side,” noting that “through our follow-up, the dams The Turkish state was not affected by the earthquakes, and its situation is safe.”
The devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, a few days ago, raised fears that Iraqi dams might be affected by aftershocks, especially the “Mosul Dam”, which is treated daily with cement because it was built on calcareous soil with a high solubility rate. From the legislative and oversight side, the Parliamentary Marshes Committee stated that Turkey will not be able to withhold water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers for more than this time.
A member of the committee, Representative Thaer Makhaif, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The dams are able to absorb water because all the reservoirs have reached what is known as (dead reservoirs), which confirms the ability to absorb any water releases,” noting that “if That water is not absorbed; It can be converted and thrown into the marshes.”
The Ministry of Water Resources denied what was circulated by many media outlets and social media of news that neighboring Turkey had opened its dams, following the earthquakes that occurred in Turkey and Syria, as a precautionary measure by them.
For his part, the water expert, Tahsin al-Moussawi, said in an interview with Al-Sabah that “the recent dry years that the region witnessed did not only hit Iraq, but also struck the countries of the region, except that the sharing of the damage was not fair or on everyone, but only on Iraq.” And that neighboring countries did not abide by international law in sharing drought damage.
He added, "The storage energy in Iraq's dams has reached the stage of (the dead part), which is a dangerous percentage," noting that "the absorptive capacity of Iraq reaches the limits of 180 billion cubic meters, and includes water bodies, dams, and the amount of absorption of the marshes," and pointed out that "Iraq Today, a large amount of water is needed, but the Ministry of Water Resources has confirmed that until this moment there are no water releases from Turkey.
