Today, Wednesday, the Iraqi nuclear scientist, Hamid Al-Bahli, detailed Iraq's capabilities in the field of nuclear energy and the importance of proceeding with the establishment of its reactors, and while setting its goals, he clarified about its material cost and time limit for its completion.
Al-Bahli said in a statement to the official agency, “When the Atomic Energy Law No. 43 of 2016 was issued, it included the construction, construction and management of nuclear facilities, including nuclear reactors, after which the International Atomic Energy Agency issued the additional protocol, and Iraq signed it, and among the contents of Article II, which It states: (What are the countries’ plans for the ten years in the nuclear fuel cycle)?
He added, "Iraq sent the International Atomic Energy Agency its plan from 2023 to 2030, which includes the establishment of nuclear reactors, subcritical systems, and nuclear power plants, called the nuclear fuel cycle," noting that "Iraq, according to circumstances and financial capabilities, is thinking about this, and less than a week ago." The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, head of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, traveled to the International Atomic Energy Agency, and held a dialogue with the Director General of the Agency and officials, and the discussion took place on the establishment of a zero reactor and a subcritical system, and therefore Iraq is going in this field.
He stressed that "the absence of nuclear reactors causes a loss to Iraq estimated between 3-5 billion dollars annually, and now most of the nuclear reactors have very wide uses in all fields, including the medical field and the treatment of cancer patients," noting that "Iraq is the first country in the region to treat cancer with isotopes." Radioactive in 1952, that is, 71 years ago, and spread this culture to many countries of the world.
He pointed out that “Iraq is advanced in this field, and it used to import radioactive isotopes from Britain and convert them into pharmaceutical packages, and in 1968 it had a nuclear reactor and began producing radioactive isotopes and treating cancer patients and sending radioisotopes to neighboring and friendly countries, as we used to send them to Syria, Egypt and Libya.” Free".
And he added, “Since 1991, and as a result of the wars and the bombing of our nuclear facilities, Iraq has been importing short-lived radioactive isotopes that have major problems,” stressing “the need to establish nuclear reactors not only for the purpose of the medical side, but also to invest in testing on the agricultural side and improving the development of agricultural products.” .
And he continued: “Before we started with atomic energy, the yield of a dunam did not exceed 400 kg for wheat or barley, and we brought it to 1750 kg, that is, we doubled it from 4 to 5 times, and it could also double more, in addition to entering many fields in energy, oil and electricity,” stressing, Nuclear reactors are necessary to sustain life.
He pointed out that “the Iraqi reactor, after its operation since 1968, is considered one of the first reactors in the region, and it was developed to a capacity of 5 megawatts, after which an agreement was reached with France to establish a reactor on the basis of 40 megawatts, related to environmental, biological, climatic and seismic criteria,” stressing “ There should be an in-depth study, in addition to the standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency, in addition to the national standards.
He explained, “The financial cost of a nuclear reactor varies according to its capacity, as it may be from 100 million dollars to 150 or 200 million dollars, depending on the reactors and the purpose required of them, whether they are for the purpose of producing radioactive isotopes in industry, agriculture, energy, and many fields.”
And he continued: “We need 5 to 6 years to construct a new reactor, but if we benefit from the accumulated Iraqi experience, the establishment of a reactor may not exceed only one year or a year and a half, and this requires the return of the competencies that left Iraq and worked in atomic energy and operate the reactors of the world, whether they are In America, France or England, and therefore, if they return to Iraq, there will be the possibility of operating the reactor in less than a year, and producing and providing services to the Iraqi people.
He noted that "the UN Security Council in 1991 imposed a blockade on Iraq, isolating it from the world, and in 2010 it said it was impossible for Iraq to regain the international status it had before the issuance of Resolution 612."
He added, “The Iraqis had an international footprint, and this was reflected in many countries of the world, especially since they worked in the best hospitals in America and British factories and in various fields in the countries of the world, including Dr. And Thamer Abdul Razzaq, and if they return to Iraq, it is possible to build a new reactor within a year.
