Shafaq News/ Huge dangers facing Iraqi fishermen who fish at sea, Kuwaiti and Iranian, made them return to their families disappointed.

    Uncompensated hunters
"The work of fishermen at sea has become vulnerable to attack in the territorial waters, without any deterrent to these attacks," the fisherman Ali, a resident of Al-Faw, told Shafaq News agency reporter, stressing that "these attacks have increased excessively during the last five years."
He added, "Dozens of ships were vandalized and smashed, especially from the Kuwaiti side, without obtaining any compensation, and perhaps the most prominent ship that was wrecked is the Al-Bashir ship, which can transport 14 fishermen at the same time," noting that "there are fishermen who are still detained in prisons." Kuwait for more than 10 years.
    We lost everything
Badran Al-Tamimi, head of the Al-Nasr Association that deals with fishermen's affairs in Basra, told Shafaq News agency, "The situation is as it is. We are subjected daily to dozens of attacks on the part of the Kuwaiti and Iranian sides," pointing out that "the fishermen's production has decreased to terrifying levels, as we were previously wandering around in a show." The sea with 1,600 fishing boats, but now Iraq owns about 150 boats only, as hundreds of fishermen withdrew because they were subjected to daily humiliation by the Kuwaiti and Iranian coast guards.
Al-Tamimi added, "The attacks take place in Khawr Abdullah within the Iraqi territorial waters, and as for the Iraqi Coast Guard, it is powerless in this field, and we have never seen it defending the work of fishermen in front of the aggressors from neighboring countries, and there are also hundreds of private companies that It takes care of the oil interests, so we did not see it turning away from the fishermen, and their only concern is taking care of the American oil interests in the region.”
And he indicated that "thousands of families lost their livelihoods because of these actions, and we did not see anyone to compensate them, as the daily auction used to open with two meals, the first from three in the morning until eleven in the morning, and the second from four in the afternoon until eleven in the evening, but now it opens for only two hours a day."
He stressed, "The Al-Nasr Association, which deals with fishermen's affairs, has visited many governments to inform them of what is happening to the Iraqi fisherman in its territorial waters, but without any decision that restores prestige to the Iraqi citizen."
    A glimmer of hope
The head of the fish department at the Basra Agriculture Directorate, Abbas al-Rikabi, explained to Shafaq News agency, "The marine fishing does not suffer any suffering, except for the occasional attacks on Iraqi fishermen by the Kuwaiti and Iranian coast guards."
He continued, "Recently, Iraq, represented by the Prime Minister, signed an agreement with the Kuwaiti side, represented by the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister, which included several matters, most notably defining joint fishing areas between the two countries, in which Iraqi fishermen are not attacked if they are in them in the future."
He explained, "This agreement will have a clear impact during the coming period on the work of fishermen in the marine waters between the two countries."
Al-Zarkani continued, "As for the quantities of fish, they are available and there is no shortage at the present time, and the Basra governorate still exports daily tons of fish from the Iraqi governorates for the purpose of selling them in their local markets."
