Jordan confirmed the completion of all preparations for electrical interconnection operations, and that the Kingdom is ready to supply Iraq via the "Risha-Rutba" line with capacities ranging between 50 and 150 megawatts/hour.

It was scheduled to start operating the electrical interconnectionJordan and IraqOn August 1, according to a spokesmanIraqi Ministry of Electricity Ahmed MusaRecently, but that has not happened yet.

The Ministry confirmed that the technical and logistical matters related to the connection have been completed, and that the issue is currently in the hands of the Iraqi side.

In the first half of August, Jordanian Minister of EnergySaleh Al-Kharabshehconfirmed the Kingdom's readiness, and that the project would begin within days.
Al-Kharabsheh said that his country has an electrical interconnection project with Iraq, and it is being implemented in two phases. In the first interconnection phase, it was agreed with the Iraqi side to start the interconnection line between the “Risha and Rutba” regions, and it depends on a medium effort.

He added that the second phase of the electrical connection between Jordan and Iraq is the connection line between the Risha areas and Al-Qaim, with a capacity of 400 kilovolts.

Iraq's position
so far, no clarification has been issuedIraqi Ministry of ElectricityRegarding the reasons for postponing the start of the electrical connection with Jordan.

However, Moussa said, in statements last month, that the electrical connection with Jordan will enter the first phase in the next few days and will range between 50 and 150 megawatts, but that has not happened yet.

He pointed out the completion of the work of connecting the Risha station inside Jordan and the Rutba station inside Anbar Governorate, and there is a connection that will be through the Risha station towards Al-Qaim, stressing that the first phase is ready from the Iraqi and Jordanian sides, and the connection will enter into force soon, while the second phase will reach capacity. To 250 megawatts, and in the third phase, it will reach 960 megawatts.

He was the mayor of Rutba District in AnbarImad Mishal Al-DulaimiOn August 21, 2023, it was announced that all work on the electrical interconnection project between...Jordan and Iraq.

Al-Dulaimi said that the Iraqi side is technically ready to receive the amount of electrical energy supplied from Jordan, after installing all 132 kilovolt stations and station 33, and wiring the entire line to the Rutba secondary station.

He stressed that the electrical connection line between Jordan and Iraq is technically ready, and is awaiting the implementation of the agreements, and at that time it is expected that operations will begin before the end of August to end the suffering of Rutba, a complete outage That has lasted for several years.

Iraq and Jordan laid the foundation stone for the electrical interconnection project between the two countries in 2022, which aims in its first phase to supply Iraq with 150 megawatts, rising to 500 megawatts in the second phase, and 900 megawatts in the third phase.

Iraq produces 24,000 megawatts of electrical energy, while the actual need is about 37,000, which leads to frequent power outages, especially during the summer, which witnesses a significant rise in temperatures in Iraq.

Baghdad seeks to diversify its sources of importing electricity, after it had relied on Iran alone during the past years by importing electrical energy, in addition to gas fuel to feed local electrical power stations.
