    Baghdad today - follow-up
In statements that, according to observers, appear to be an indirect response to the Iraqi factions’ tendencies to involve the country in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani affirmed that the stability of the national decision is at the forefront of principles, and that “the state is responsible for making major decisions in accordance with the constitution.” And based on the higher interest of the Iraqis.”
The danger of opening the Iraqi front
Al-Sudani's statements come at a time when regional tension is escalating due to the Gaza war that erupted about a month ago, amid indications of its expansion in scope and the opening of new fronts, observers fear that the Iraqi front may be one of them.
Over the past few days, there have been repeated attacks by Iraqi factions on American bases in Iraq, such as the Ain al-Assad base in Anbar and Harir in Erbil, as well as the bases around Baghdad and Erbil international airports.
The targeting of these factions included the American Al-Tanf base in southern Syria, and other bases of the international coalition against ISIS in Al-Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria.
Observers warn that these factions will intensify their attacks, especially in the border areas between Iraq and Syria, targeting American military and diplomatic headquarters as well, especially in Baghdad and Erbil, in addition to targeting Israeli territory.
This matter, according to observers, “may lead to Iraq being embroiled in a wide-scale war, which will have a negative impact on its security, stability, international relations and obligations.”
    War decision
Security and political analyst Ali Al-Baidar, from Al-Sudani, says: “Al-Sudani’s statements clearly come to confirm that the state is the one responsible for determining Iraq’s political options and its sovereign decisions, such as declaring war, in the midst of the escalation of armed groups and factions, especially during the past three days, in their attacks against American bases.”
He added, "This threatens the expansion of the conflict and the entry of regional powers into the line to open other fronts with Israel," indicating that "Iraq's official policy is neither with this escalation nor with the country turning into an arena for settling scores and regional confrontations."
He pointed out that "despite its well-known principled position of standing with the Palestinian issue and committing to it, Iraq is also keen to avoid involvement in military conflicts and to emphasize that sovereign and fateful decisions are restricted to the state only."
