The Ministry of Justice is preparing to join the ninth convention in the field of human rights as part of the integrated strategy to implement the country’s obligations in this file.
The Ministry's official spokesman, Kamel Amin, told Al-Sabah: After the country joined eight conventions in the field of human rights, the Ministry is preparing to join the Ninth Convention for Migrant Workers, especially since these agreements require the submission of periodic reports on the extent of application of human rights standards in its correctional departments, which Submit to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
He stated that after the abolition of the Ministry of Human Rights and the creation of a department in the Ministry of Justice that prepares reports that are submitted in coordination with the ministries and the Kurdistan Regional Government on behalf of Iraq, there is a coordinator between the two sides for the purpose of providing the department with the information it needs in preparing reports.
He continued that the country, with its democracy and its commitment to applying human rights standards, obligated the ministry to join the agreements related to the field of human rights, which will provide a number of positive repercussions, including the provision of international aid.
Amin stated that the Ministry is working to implement human rights standards for inmates, detainees, and their families in its correctional departments by observing and monitoring human rights reports, and this comes within the government program.
