    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Justice announced, on Thursday, that renewing the contract to feed prisoners saved the state 100 billion dinars, which also included provisions obligating the supplying company to reduce financial costs and improve the quality of food .
Ministry spokesman Kamel Amin said, in an interview with “Shfaq News” agency, which was reviewed by “Al-Eqtisad News”, that “Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani took a decision immediately upon assuming the presidency of the government to review all contracts that were concluded by the previous government, including the food file.” Prisoners, and after reviewing it, he found there were many weak points .”
He added that one of the weak points is “the lack of penal terms on the company preparing the food, the amount of the contract is exaggerated and the quality of the food is not good, and there are no clauses focusing on the quality of the food, all of which were negotiated, and the file was presented to the Council of Ministers and its approval to renew the contract was obtained.” ".
Amin stated, “The conditions were amended by drawing up an annex to the contract and having it signed by the local company, which is mixed. The amount of meals per day was also reduced to less than ten thousand dinars after it was 11 thousand, and the duration of the contract was also reduced from seven years to five years.” With the imposition of penal conditions and emphasis on the quality of food, this measure saved the state treasury more than 100 billion dinars .”
He explained that "the company equipped is from a mixed sector and is linked to the Hajj and Umrah Authority, and the contract amount is linked to the number of prisoners being fed, whose number ranges between 80 to 85 thousand prisoners and detainees in all Iraqi provinces except the Kurdistan Region. "
It was stated that the Ministry of Justice runs 36 prisons, juvenile rehabilitation institutions, and observation homes (in which juveniles are detained in preparation for their trial), and contracts with private companies, and the contract determines the quantity and quality of food provided to inmates, detainees, and detainees, according to the report on the human rights situation in Iraq issued in 2020, which confirms The Ministry of Justice contracted with four companies in Baghdad and Al-Karkh, namely Al-Ma’mal and Mais Al-Reem, to provide food to the prisoners of Taji and the Justice Complex, north of the capital .
