    On Saturday, the Ministry of Agriculture clarified the position on the cultivation of the crop (anmber rice) and watermelon in general after stopping it for two years due to water scarcity. While it revealed resorting to the dry farming method, it talked about a second method being adopted to increase the cultivated areas in Najaf Al-Ashraf and Diwaniyah .
    The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, said in an interview with the official news agency, which Al-Eqtisad News reviewed, that “water scarcity and the lack of water revenues from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have greatly affected the cultivation of the watermelon crop, which is considered one of the most important strategic crops in Iraq, especially the amber variety.” Which is considered Iraq’s distinctive identity and the best in the world .”
    He added, "The cultivated areas for the watermelon crop for the past year, 2023, were reduced to 10,500 dunums, then reduced to 5,000 dunums to preserve seeds only. Cultivation of the watermelon crop was prohibited for two consecutive years by the Ministry of Water Resources due to the decline in water revenues, and the cultivated areas were preserved only for this variety." Amber and the continued viability of the seeds for the coming years, with the hope that Iraq’s water revenues will be improved .”
    He continued, "The Ministry has now turned to cultivating amber rice and rice in general by the dry method, that is, cultivation in moist soil in areas with low rainfall, and encouraging farmers to use this method. In addition, the Agricultural Research Department has conducted experiments on the farms of the Najaf Al-Ashraf Governorate in Al-Mishkhab, by cultivating a category of milkshakes through Fixed sprinklers, and this will reflect positive results in the future to generalize this experience on all farms in the governorates, specifically in the governorates of Najaf Al-Ashraf and Diwaniyah .”
    Al-Jubouri called on “the federal government to put pressure on the Turkish government, through international organizations and friendly and influential countries, to release Iraq’s scheduled share and also to confirm the document of understanding between Iraq and Turkey in 2014 to guarantee Iraq’s share of the scheduled water releases for the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. ”
