Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the "government's approach" to resolve the situation on the common border "according to the mechanism by which the border with Iran was secured," stressing Iraq's determination not to allow its territory to be used as a launching pad for "aggression or threats to any neighboring country."
This came during al-Sudani's meeting, on Wednesday evening (September 25, 2024) Baghdad time, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on the sidelines of his participation in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting, bilateral relations between the two countries were discussed, and the results of the meetings of the committees formed to implement the memoranda of understanding concluded during Mr. Erdogan's visit to Baghdad last April were reviewed.
According to a statement from his media office, al-Sudani explained the importance of joint work and coordination on the Iraq Development Road project, and following up on the "outcomes of the agreements and joint memoranda of understanding" between the two countries.
He stressed the government's approach to "resolving pending files" and resolving the situation regarding the common border "according to the mechanism by which the border with Iran was secured," stressing that "Iraqi territory will not be used as a launching pad for aggression or threats to any neighboring country."
In March 2023, Iraq and Iran signed a joint security agreement, after Tehran accused Iranian Kurdistan parties of involvement in the protests that followed the death of Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the Guidance Police in Tehran.
