The Iraqi Border Guard announced the construction of more than 100 watchtowers on the border of the Iraqi Kurdistan region with Iran. According to an Iraqi statement, this measure comes within the security agreement between Baghdad and Tehran, “to protect the borders from security chaos and smuggling,” which began implementation in mid-September.
A day before the end of the deadline set by Iran to evacuate the headquarters of the Iranian Kurdish parties in the Kurdistan region, and in conjunction with the continuation of Iranian threats in this regard, the Iraqi National Security Advisor, Qasim Al-Araji, visited the city of Erbil.
According to information, the Iraqi National Security Advisor went to Erbil on September 18, accompanied by a high-level military security delegation, to review the security agreement between Tehran and Baghdad.
In a meeting in the city of Erbil, the Minister of Interior of the Kurdistan Region, Reber Ahmed, spoke with the Iraqi National Security Advisor and the United Nations Representative in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert.
The content of this meeting was to review the settlement of all Iranian Kurdish refugees residing in the Kurdistan region in a camp in the city of Soran, 70 kilometers from Erbil.
Last September, Rasoul Sanayi Rad, political assistant at the General Command of Iranian Forces, said that Iran had adopted an “iron fist” policy towards Kurdish groups stationed in the Kurdistan region.
He added that Iran set a deadline for the presence of these groups in the region in the agreement it concluded with Iraq.
Iran has previously threatened several times that it will take measures if the Iranian Kurdish party forces are not “disarmed” and removed from areas near Iran’s border with the Iraqi Kurdistan region.
It is noteworthy that during the nationwide uprising against the Iranian regime after the assassination of Mahsa Amini, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard repeatedly bombed Kurdish positions.
The Iraqi National Security Council announced in a statement following its meeting regarding the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s attacks on the Kurdistan region and Turkey’s attacks on northern Iraq, the necessity of developing a plan to redeploy Iraqi forces along the borders with Iran and Turkey.
