Member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Wafa Muhammad Karim, confirmed today, Monday (January 8, 2024), that all indicators are positive regarding amending the region’s share in the budget, expressing his fear of a “last-minute coup.”
Karim said in an interview, “The region’s delegation has just begun negotiations with the federal government to resolve the issue of the region’s share in the budget and the issue of the oil and gas law.”
He added, "The Council of Ministers may approve amending the budget in its next session, if the technical observations made by the region's delegation are resolved, and there is a consensus on amending the budget and resolving the region's share within Parliament."
He pointed out that “the regional government delegation received positive messages to resolve the issue, but we learned that there was a retreat in the last moments, and we hope that this time the agreement will be adhered to.”
An informed political source revealed, last Saturday, that the Kurdistan Region delegation received positive messages regarding amending the region’s share in the budget, indicating that the visit of the head of the Popular Mobilization Forces, Faleh al-Fayyad, to Erbil a few days ago carried a message from the coordination framework and preparation to end all problems with the region. As the leaders of the framework do not want to open a new front of dispute with the Kurdistan region.
The Kurdistan Regional Government is looking forward to two important issues in the budget: the first is adjusting the cost of extracting a barrel of oil and the shares of foreign companies to resume exports, as well as separating the salaries of the region’s employees from other financial disputes and not placing them under actual spending.
