    Mawazine News - Baghdad
Najaf Governorate seeks to establish a free zone on the border with Saudi Arabia, stressing that it will eliminate unemployment in five governorates.
The governor’s advisor for industry affairs, Shahid Al-Ardi, told Al-Sabah, “The governorate sought this project because it achieves diversity in the country’s non-oil resources, especially since the country only has one free zone in Basra Governorate, while there are 120 free zones in the Arab countries. The UAE owns 20 zones, noting that these zones generate significant revenues for countries. The UAE, for example, has annual revenues from its free zones amounting to $100 billion.
He pointed out, "There is a feasibility study prepared by specialists in the governorate confirming that the revenues of the free zone in Najaf can reach 160 billion dinars annually, and that it is also sufficient to eliminate unemployment in it, as well as in four neighboring governorates."
As for the importance of establishing this region, Al-Aridi stated that “its importance lies because of the location of Najaf, which is in the middle of all the governorates, in addition to the presence of Najaf Al-Ashraf International Airport and four factories for public sector companies, which are factories for tires, cement, ready-made garments, and leather, in addition to three thousand factories for the private sector, including 100 factories in the Bahr al-Najaf region, in addition to factories that export their production abroad, such as the Salman Doss Carpet Manufacturing Factory, which exports its production to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Jordan, in addition to the political, religious, and tourism dimension of the Holy Najaf Governorate, which encouraged the Saudi side to welcome the opening of a border crossing with Iraq.
