    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Wednesday (February 14, 2024), Member of Parliament Hussein Habib identified two paths to remove foreign forces from Iraq, while noting that the security situation in Iraq is stable at the present time.
Habib said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Our principled and consistent opinion supports the removal of foreign forces from Iraq, but provided that the government is the one with the principle of assessing the situation, and it has confirmed more than once that there is no need for foreign forces in light of the growing capabilities of the Iraqi security forces in all its aspects." It has become more powerful in facing security challenges.”
He added, "The removal of foreign forces must be according to what the government sees in terms of coordination in order to avoid any security gaps that cause harm later," pointing out that "the government has the tasks of assessing the situation and organizing mechanisms for removing those forces from military bases according to clear and established mechanisms." .
Habib pointed out, “Iraq’s security situation is stable and much better than previous years, and removing foreign forces after the need for them is no longer necessary is a national choice.”
The US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) announced on Monday (February 12, 2024) that the meetings of the military committees with the Iraqis do not discuss the US withdrawal from Iraq.
The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasool, announced last Sunday that Iraq and the United States held talks in order to formulate a timetable for “a studied and gradual reduction, leading to the end of the mission of the international coalition forces” in Iraq.
He added, "As long as nothing disturbs the peace of the talks, the meetings will occur periodically to complete the committee's work as quickly as possible."
The talks between the two countries began last January, but less than 24 hours later, three American soldiers were killed in an attack in Jordan, causing the talks to stop.
