American court sentenced an Iraqi refugee to more than 14 years in prison, who sought to bring in an ISIS assassination squad with the aim of killing former US President George W. Bush, according to the Washington Times.

The newspaper explained that Judge Michael Watson issued his decision, last Monday, to imprison the refugee Shihab Ahmed Shihab for 178 months, after he pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to “terrorists.”

The judge also ordered Shehab to face 15 years of supervised release, although he may be deported at the end of his sentence, according to the newspaper.

The Washington Times said that Shihab blamed Bush for the chaos that gripped Iraq after the 2003 American war, which toppled Saddam Hussein's regime.

She pointed out that Shehab's case highlighted the easily porous American immigration system.

It quoted prosecutors as saying that Shihab entered the United States on a visa he obtained from a corrupt official at the American embassy in Baghdad.

She explained that once Shihab arrived in America, he desperately sought to stay, submitted an asylum request and tried to organize a fake marriage, confirming that he obtained “fake divorce papers from his wife in Iraq to attempt a fake marriage.”
