Iran's Revolutionary Guard plans to assassinate John Bolton

On Wednesday, the US Department of Justice revealed  the details of an attempt by an Iranian citizen, who is a member of the Revolutionary Guards, to assassinate John Bolton, the former US National Security Adviser, during the era of Donald Trump.
A  ministry statement  posted on its website stated that judicial documents showed that starting in October 2021, Shahram Borsafi, also known as Mahdi Rezaei, 45, tried to exploit “international trade facilities” to assassinate Bolton, most likely in response to the killing of the Quds Force commander. In the Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Soleimani, in January of 2020.
The ministry stated that Borsafi, who works on behalf of the Revolutionary Guards, tried to pay individuals in the United States to carry out the murder in the American capital, Washington, or the neighboring state of Maryland.
The documents indicate that on October 22, 2021, Borsafi asked Person A, a resident of the United States, whom he had previously met online, to take pictures of the former National Security Adviser, claiming that the pictures would be used in a book that Borsafi was writing.
A told him that he/she could give it to someone else taking the photos for between $5,000 and $10,000, and actually gave it to that person (called a secret human resource).
Borsafi contacted the collaborator via an encrypted chat application, then asked him to talk to him through another chat application, and offered him $250,000 to find someone who could “eliminate” the former National Security Adviser, and it was eventually agreed to pay $300,000, and told him that he had Another task for which he will be paid a million dollars.
He asked him to open a cryptocurrency account to facilitate the payment, told him that the crime would likely have to be carried out before the agreed amount was paid, and warned him that the Borsafi “group” would be angry if the payment was made and the process was not completed.
The ministry says in the statement that a subsequent search in one of the Iranian accounts on the Internet revealed pictures of him wearing the official uniform and the insignia of the Revolutionary Guards.
During their contacts, the person referred to him several times with descriptions suggesting that Borsafi is a member of the Revolutionary Guards’ “Quds Force,” which Borsafi never denied.
On November 14, 2021, the person asked Borsafi to help locate Bolton, and the latter later gave him his Washington office address.
On November 25, Borsafi took screenshots of a mapping app showing a view of the street where the office is located. He indicates that the address is "10,162 km away", which is the approximate distance between Washington and Tehran.
On November 19, Borsafi informed the collaborator that it did not matter to him how the crime was carried out, but that his “group” would ask him for a video confirming the killing of the target.
When the source asked him what would happen if the killing was attributed to Iran. He asked him not to worry about it and that the "group" would take care of this.
On December 22, Borsafi sent him a photograph of two plastic bags, each appearing to contain stacks of US currency and a handwritten note underneath that reads: “(Name of collaborator) 22.12.2021.”
On December 29, Borsafi asked him when the operation would be carried out and told him that his “group” wanted it to be carried out quickly.
On January 3, 2022, he informed him of the pressure on him from the “people he deals with” to complete the process, and that he should report any delay. The person asked him about the number of participants in the operation, and he told him that he is under the leadership of only one person, but that there is a chain of command followed by his boss.
On the same day, Borsafi expressed his regret that the murder would not take place by the anniversary of Qassem Soleimani's death, and stated that he was concerned that if it was not carried out soon, the operation would be withdrawn from them.
Borsafi advised the collaborator that if he used a "small weapon", he would have to get close to the target, but if he used a "bigger weapon", he could stay away.

On January 18, the collaborator sent publicly available information to Borsafi indicating that the former national security adviser might be traveling outside the Washington, D.C. area at the time he wanted the operation to take place, and replied that he wanted to "check something."
Within an hour, Borsafi informed him that the target was in fact not traveling, and then provided details of Bolton's schedule, which did not appear to be publicly available.
On January 21, 2022, Borsafi told the collaborator that after completing the first “mission” successfully, he would get a second task against another target, and said that his monitoring process had been completed, and that the information was collected “by the United States” and “not by Google,” indicating that That someone working on behalf of the Quds Force had monitored the second target in the United States.
On February 1, 2022, Borsafi told the collaborator that if he did not carry out the operation within two weeks, the task would be withdrawn from him, and informed him that someone had checked the area around the house of the former National Security Adviser, and believed that there was no security presence, so he should be able to “ finish the job.”
On March 10, Borsafi told him that he had another assassination mission to do in the United States, and postponed the first. About a month later, Borsafi encouraged the collaborator to accept the offer, explaining that if the second mission was successfully carried out, Borsafi would be able to reconcile with his "group" and entrust him again with the task of assassinating Bolton.
On April 28, 2022, the collaborator told Borsafi that he would not continue working without being paid, and the latter agreed to send $100 of cryptocurrency to a digital wallet created by the collaborator earlier that day, to prove the possibility of payment. Later that day, the cryptocurrency wallet received two payments of $100.
If convicted, Borsafi faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 for using trading facilities in the commission of the murder-for-hire, up to 15 years in prison, and a fine of up to $250,000 for providing and attempting to provide material support for a fleeting murder plot. for the borders.
Borsafi is still at large abroad, according to a statement by the Ministry of Justice.
"This is not the first time that we have uncovered Iranian plots to retaliate against individuals on American soil, and we will work tirelessly to expose and disrupt each and every one of these efforts," Assistant Attorney General Matthew J. said in the department's statement.
“Iran has a history of plotting to assassinate individuals in the United States that it considers a threat, but the United States government has a long history of holding those who threaten the safety of our citizens accountable,” said Larissa Knapp, Assistant Executive Director of the FBI.
"There should be no doubt: The FBI, the US government, and our partners will remain vigilant in combating such threats here in the United States and abroad," she added.
On Wednesday, the Watters news agency quoted a US official as saying that the indictment of a member of the Revolutionary Guards "should not affect diplomatic efforts regarding the nuclear agreement."
Iran backed away from two main demands in the negotiations to revive the nuclear deal and asked for a new condition for signing the deal,  the New York Times reported,  citing people familiar with the talks.
Iran has waived the demand to remove the Revolutionary Guards from the list of American terrorist organizations, in addition to abandoning its demands for guarantees that the future American president will not withdraw from the deal.
In return, Iran demanded a new condition that the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) abandon a three-year investigation into enriched uranium at various facilities, including some that Tehran refuses to allow UN inspectors to visit.
