The oil and economic expert, Nabil Al-Marsoumi, revealed the existence of powerful wills in Iraq working to keep the electricity sector hostage to Iranian gas.
Al-Marsoumi said in a statement followed by Mawazine News, that “the current total demand for electricity amounts to 36 thousand megawatts, while the volume of energy produced is 26 thousand megawatts.
He explained that there is a large gap between production and demand and that it will continue and expand in the coming years, suggesting that the consumption need in Iraq will reach 70 thousand megawatts by the year 2050. Al-Marsoumi
also expected that Iraq will remain dependent on Iranian gas during the coming years, due to the lack of a real will to stop it. Dependence on Iran in this field, in addition to the slowness in exploiting local gas, as Iraq is still the third largest country in burning gas.
He pointed out that "influential parties aim to disrupt Iraqi gas production, which is what happened during the missile attacks that targeted the Khormer field in Kurdistan, and these parties seek to disrupt Iraq's dependence on local gas."
