The Iraqi government spokesman, Bassem Al-Awadi, confirmed today, Sunday, that the government bears high costs in importing improved and super gasoline, amounting to 4 billion dollars annually, while he indicated that the gasoline file needs from a year to a year and a half to achieve self-sufficiency and provide it with higher quality and prices that do not constitute... A burden on citizens.
Al-Awadi said in a press interview: “The decision to raise the price of improved and super gasoline came in the context of the Council of Ministers’ decisions regarding the issue of traffic congestion and to reduce traffic congestion.”
He added, "Gasoline of all types, regular, improved, and super, is subsidized by the state, and the prices of its types sold to citizens are lower than the costs of production and refinement."
He continued, "The government spends 3-4 billion dollars annually to import petroleum derivatives of improved and regular gasoline, and is proceeding in parallel with a plan to achieve self-sufficiency in derivatives and hopes to start production at higher capacity in the Karbala refinery, as well as the Basra refineries and the rest of the refineries, so that we can reach sufficiency by the middle of next year, 2025." Or its end as a maximum, and thus spending these large sums on imports will stop.”
He pointed out that "achieving this will enable the government to set gasoline prices that do not constitute a burden on the Iraqi citizen."
Al-Awadi stressed that “the current increase did not reach several times the current price for improved and regular gasoline, but rather increased by a small margin, and the Ministry of Oil promised that with the completion of the current production lines in the refineries, which will adopt the latest technologies, the quality of petroleum derivatives will rise, and thus within a year to a year and a half, citizens will see an increase in quality.” Gasoline is also available at prices that do not constitute a burden on them.”
