The dollar continued to fluctuate in the parallel markets, recording a selling price that touched the limits of 146 thousand dinars per 100 dollars during the past days, a number that observers describe as important compared to what the green currency reached in previous times, stressing the necessity of continuing the financial and monetary policy approach in limiting the currency’s rises. At the same time, it is likely that the dollar exchange rate will continue to decline in the coming periods as a result of the success of the Central Bank in meeting all foreign trade needs of the green currency.
The Parliamentary Investment and Development Committee acknowledged the decline in exchange rates and the achievement of positive results in the local markets in recent months, while economic affairs specialists stressed the need to preserve the economic gains achieved recently, especially the stability of prices in the local markets, which they attributed to the decline of the dollar. The financial advisor to the Prime Minister, Dr. Mazhar Muhammad Salih, confirmed in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency “INA” that “economic policy played a major role in imposing a climate of stability in the general level of dollar exchange rates,” indicating that “the state of superiority of the official exchange market in financing Iraq’s foreign trade It caused a decline in the effects of the parallel market and a decline in its illegal activities.”
In confirmation of what Counselor Saleh said, the economic expert, Nabil Jabbar Al-Tamimi, indicated during his speech to “Al-Sabah” that “the growth of the Central Bank’s sales, reaching more than 252 million dollars (last Monday’s sales volume) represents that the official market for selling the currency contains most of the... Dollar requests by merchants,” pointing out that “the needs of the parallel market have decreased significantly over the past recent periods as a result of the success of the central bank’s policy.”
Al-Tamimi ruled out that the parallel exchange rate would reach the limits of 135 thousand dinars per 100 during the coming periods, due to the continued demand for the dollar to feed some imports that are not supported by the Central Bank, and it is likely that the green currency will reach the price barrier of 145 thousand dinars in the coming periods due to the stability of coverage of foreign currency requests. Foreign exchange and a decline in domestic demand for the dollar.
In turn, the economic expert, Manaf Al-Sayegh, indicated during his speech to “Al-Sabah” that there are “real problems that must be addressed, with the aim of reaching the lowest parallel exchange rate, and while he stressed the necessity of exploiting the decline in demand for the dollar in informal markets to achieve this goal, he called for The importance of activating financial and monetary policies that support the official exchange rate and limit parallel market activities. Al-Sayegh also urged the necessity of continuing the purposeful government approach that works to combat informal markets, and working to develop a strategic plan for financial and monetary policies to eliminate those phenomena that have affected the individual and the economy.
In a related context, the Ministry of Planning announced yesterday, Wednesday, a slight increase in the monthly inflation rate during the month of February.
The Ministry’s official spokesman, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said in a press statement: “The Statistics and Geographic Information Systems Authority monitored an increase in the inflation rate during the month of February by (0.3%), compared to the month of January, which recorded an increase of (0.4%), compared to With the last month of last year 2023.
He added, “The annual inflation rate also recorded an increase of (0.6%) during last February, compared to the same month in 2023, and the annual inflation rate during last January witnessed an increase of (0.4%) compared to its counterpart in the year 2023.” Last year.
