The Ministry of Transport announced the preparation of two solid plans for electronic clearance and closure of random garages, and while it indicated identifying sites on both banks of the Tigris and preparing special designs for these sites to establish river transport stations, it confirmed the progress of adopting a system to prevent random transport, corruption and extortion operations.
The Ministry’s Media Director, Maitham Abdel Safi, told the official agency, “Based on the directives of the Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibas Al-Saadawi, and in accordance with the government’s directions to work to reduce traffic congestion and eliminate bottlenecks in Baghdad Governorate, the General Company for Maritime Transport, in coordination with the Prime Minister’s Office, activated... River transport, as one of the means of mass transport.
Al-Safi pointed out, “A number of meetings were held in the Prime Minister’s Office and representatives of the Ministry of Water Resources, where a number of sites were identified on both banks of the Tigris River, to be river transport stations, in addition to preparing special designs for these sites by specialized engineers.”
He continued, "The Ministry of Transport is awaiting approval of these designs, to activate the river transportation process from northern Baghdad to its south, and vice versa, using modern boats and trained marine crews."
Regarding the random garages, Al-Safi explained that “the General Transport Company began developing a solid plan to get rid of the random garages,” adding: “The Minister of Transport visited the random garages and worked to close them himself, and this came in coordination with the Baghdad Operations Command, the Ministry of Interior, as well as the General Traffic Directorate.” “.
He added, "The Ministry will adopt a system of electronic gates spread throughout all of the company's garages, both in Baghdad and the governorates, which will prevent random transportation, as well as corruption, extortion, and routine dealings."
He went on to say: “The General Transport Company has developed a solid plan for the electronic clearance process, by setting up kiosks in all traffic registration departments, and setting a specific barcode for the General Traffic Directorate to read the clearance, after which it is given to the driver to register or transfer his vehicle.”
He stressed that “the company is seeking to prepare an integrated program to convert all its operations and data to electronic automation, which will eliminate all corruption operations, based on the directives of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani.”
