    Economy News - Baghdad
Today, Sunday, the River Drilling Department in the Ministry of Water Resources announced a major campaign to remove sediments and encroachments on the Tigris River, and while indicating work to remove 50 thousand cubic meters of these sediments, it confirmed the development of a plan to expand the section of the Tigris River.
The director general of the department, Mahmoud Abdullah, said in an interview followed by Al-Iqtisad News, “Based on the directives of the Minister of Water Resources, the ministry’s formations, represented by the River Irrigation Department, the Maintenance Authority, and the Water Resources Directorate in Baghdad Governorate, are carrying out a major campaign to remove violations and sediments from the bank of the Tigris River near The new Kiryat Bridge, which was recently opened,” noting that “this campaign will add great beauty to the river, in addition to the continuation of the water discharges released into the river column.”
Abdullah added, "The Tigris River in the capital, Baghdad, suffers from major violations, and the ministry is serious about removing sediments and violations in stages," noting that "the quantities expected to be lifted from this site reach about 40 to 50 thousand cubic meters."
He pointed out that "the river section contains stone cladding on both banks, and removing any amounts of encroachments and sediments will help drain the water," noting that "the bridge supports and foundations were buried, and excavation began from a distance before the main bridge pillars."
He noted that "work is underway to remove sediments, expand the river's section, and remove encroachments," stressing that "the department has more than one work site in Baghdad to remove sediments and dredging works."
