Shafaq News/ Subhan Mulla Jiyad, political affairs advisor to Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, revealed on Friday the latter’s efforts to dissuade the Kurdistan Democratic Party from boycotting the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections, stressing that the Democratic Party’s participation is “important.”

Jiyad told Shafaq News Agency, “Al-Sudani is considered a crisis solver, and that is why he is in contact on an almost daily basis with the leadership of the Democratic Party to discourage them from boycotting the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections, because this participation is of great importance and everyone knows that boycott may lead to the elections not being held.”

He added, "The Sudanese has great political acceptance among all political parties and is capable of solving many problems. He has succeeded in doing so, especially with regard to the salaries of the region's employees. This is why communication continues with the brothers in Kurdistan to solve all problems during the coming period."

He pointed out that "there are positive results from the Sudanese's movements towards the leaders of the Democratic Party. They fully appreciate the circumstances that Iraq is going through, as well as what the Sudanese is exposed to personally at various levels, and they do not hold him responsible for their boycott of the region's elections."

On March 18, the Kurdistan Democratic Party announced its boycott of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections, while threatening to leave the political process in Iraq if the “state administration” coalition did not commit to implementing the agreements.

This came in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, issued by the Political Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party regarding the decisions of the Federal Supreme Court in Iraq regarding the Kurdistan Region elections.

On March 3, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani signed a regional order setting the date for holding elections for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament on June 10.

On February 21, 2024, the Federal Court issued decisions regarding the Kurdistan Parliament elections law, which included the abolition of “quota” seats and that the Independent High Commission for Federal Elections be dissolved in place of the Kurdistan Parliament.
