The governor of Diyala agency reveals in numbers the theft of the century in the governorate and finds the criminals
Yesterday, Sunday, the Governor of Diyala Agency, Karim Ali Agha, revealed in numbers the theft of the “Century” in the governorate and the access to “criminals,” confirming that the officially stolen amounts amounted to more than 7 billion dinars.
Diyala Governor Karim Ali Agha said in a press conference, “The amounts stolen in the embezzlement process in the governorate officially amounted to 7 billion and 394 million,” stressing that “everything that is being circulated other than these numbers is incorrect.”
He explained that “those involved were employees in the accounts, and the process began with withdrawing amounts in 2019 until they were arrested weeks ago,” noting that “all those involved had arrest warrants issued against them.”
Agha continued: “We opened an investigation and found the real criminals, and two out of five of those involved were arrested,” noting that “the number of criminals may increase and the number of amounts may increase as the investigation progresses.”
He stated that “the matter happened between the employees, who were authorized to carry out the disbursement operations, and they stole the amounts through the checks without going through the legal channels.”
For his part, MP Ahmed Al-Moussawi said, during the press conference, that “a travel ban has not been circulated against those involved, and we do not know why yet.”
Al-Moussawi added, “Since 2019, the process began, and how has this committee not been changed, even though it is known that every 3 months the committees are replaced,” calling on the Prime Minister to “follow up on this issue, and I believe that there are figures with more influence on the situation in Diyala standing behind them.” Al-Moussawi stressed: The state agencies must be mobilized to arrest them, but there is a kind of laxity among some security agencies.
Meanwhile, MP Muhammad Qutaiba Al-Bayati called on the judicial authorities to “expedite the issuance of a travel ban against the accused.”
Al-Bayati added during the press conference, “We do not want what happened in the Great Theft of the Century to be repeated here in the governorate in the Diyala Robbery.”
Last Thursday, an informed source revealed the details of the disappearance of nearly 9 billion dinars from the Diyala Governorate office, similar to the famous “theft of the century” in Iraq.
The source said, “The amount that disappeared is due to the compensation amounts and is estimated at 8-9 billion dinars, and those involved in the theft were 3 employees who fled to an unknown destination.”
He explained that “the theft was carried out through checks that were gradually issued over the past 8 months, the last of which was an amount worth 3 billion dinars, which was issued a few days ago.”
The source indicated, “The theft was revealed through auditing and matching the accounts. A high-level investigation was opened by the official authorities to pursue the perpetrators.”
A member of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, representing Diyala Governorate, Representative Raad Al-Dahlaki, had pledged earlier today to open an urgent investigation into the details of this crime and coordinate with the relevant authorities in the Integrity Commission to reach the parties involved in it.
Yesterday, the representative of Diyala Governorate, Mudar Al-Karawi, revealed Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani’s pledge to take three urgent measures regarding the “theft of the century” in the governorate.
Al-Karawi said that he “communicated directly with the Prime Minister after revealing the first threads of the theft of the century in Diyala and revealing the embezzlement of billions of dinars by a network of corrupt employees that were intended to finance compensation for those affected by terrorist acts.”
He added, “Al-Sudani pledged to fully support all investigative measures, provide assistance, and seek through the security services to arrest all those involved and recover the full amounts, while supporting Diyala with investigative teams to uncover all features of the theft of the century.”
He pointed out that “Al-Sudani pledged to support the anti-corruption file in Diyala and to instruct important steps that will take their course in the coming days.”
