Before the end of this month, Iraq is awaiting the visit of the Turkish President to Baghdad, which aims to find radical solutions to the outstanding issues between the two countries, most notably the conclusion of an agreement that precisely determines Iraq’s water shares, which will be a condition for its approval to construct the Jazra Dam on the Tigris River Basin in Turkey.
The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiyab Abdullah, said in a statement followed by Mawazine News, that there is continuous communication between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the participation of the Iraqi technical team, and its Turkish counterpart, to prepare a draft and include it in the memorandum of understanding that will be signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his expected visit to Baghdad before the end of the year. This month, he expects that his visit will witness radical solutions to the outstanding issues between the two countries.
He added that the most prominent of these files is the emphasis on a vital point about reaching a clear and frank agreement regarding Iraq’s water shares, which is what Iraq seeks to resolve, noting that some important points have been identified to be compatible with the just and equitable division of water for the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, especially in Turkey continues to have multiple programs in dams and reservoirs within it. Abdullah stated that the water resource has become limited and is decreasing as a result of the climatic conditions that Iraq and the region are going through.
