Specialists demand a fair ceiling on water shares from Türkiye

The Geologists Syndicate called on the government to support and activate joint technical committees to build a cooperative and flexible administration in the field of water between Iraq and Turkey, at a time when specialists in water resources affairs demanded that the Turkish president’s visit to the country be used to find an agreement to achieve a fair ceiling for water shares.
The head of the Geologists Syndicate, Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Geologists, Saad Obaid Muhammad, said in a press conference attended by “Al-Sabah”: The visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the country is of great importance, given the country’s suffering from the water scarcity crisis, as it has become a major dilemma for the country. For his part, Professor in the field of water resources, Nazir Al-Ansari, told “Al-Sabah”: The water file is very sensitive due to the significant decrease in Iraq’s imports.
He added that Iraq used to receive 30 billion cubic meters of water annually from the Euphrates, and in recent years it has decreased to less than nine billion cubic meters, and currently the water storage in Haditha Dam is less than 2 billion cubic meters, so its dimensions are negative in this context, indicating that the decrease in expenditures Rivers in Iraq are mainly caused by hydrological projects in neighboring countries in addition to climate change.

In turn, the geological consultant, Ali Muhammad Jawad, told “Al-Sabah”: The water file is witnessing increasing attention during the term of the current government, as it cannot be tolerated, as it constitutes a lead in development. Over the past two decades, Iraq has witnessed a clear decline in its water revenues from neighboring countries. In addition to a sharp decrease in rainfall over many years, this has exacerbated its water scarcity and the inability to meet its water needs for agricultural and even environmental purposes, causing an increase in land desertification and the rush of salty marine water into the Shatt al-Arab in particular, and also leading to the abandonment of farmers from their lands.
For his part, the Director of the Advisory Office of the Geologists Syndicate, Dr. Mazen Al-Aboudi, called for the necessity of creating a participatory atmosphere between the Iraqi and Turkish consulting bodies to provide scientific advice to the official bodies concerned with the water file in the two countries.
He added that it is important to open the door to agricultural investments and the food industry with strategic projects for Turkish companies inside the country in exchange for guarantees for equitable water distribution.
