    Economy News - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday, the Ministry of Environment announced that the Radiation Protection Center will begin installing and testing radiation screening gates at all border crossings, indicating that this aims to prevent the introduction of any contaminated material or material carrying a radioactive source.
Environment Minister Nizar Amidi said in a statement received by Al-Iqtisad News: “In implementation of the directives of the Prime Minister and national efforts to protect citizens, a project to install and test gates for radiation screening at all border crossings has been activated and is moving forward with its completion, and advancing the supervisory work of the Radiation Protection Center.” In controlling all food and consumer goods and enhancing the radiological examination capacity at border crossings, land, sea and air.”
He added, "An integrated investment project has been prepared that includes installing radiological examination gates at all ports, establishing four laboratories, and linking the gate network within a monitoring system that is centrally controlled by the center."
For his part, the Director General of the Radiation Protection Center, Sabah Al-Husseini, indicated, according to the statement, that “the work on the radiation examination will be under the direct supervision of the center,” pointing out that “a monitoring station will be set up at the center’s headquarters to monitor the examination procedures simultaneously and continuously.”
He stated that "these gates form the basis for monitoring the entry of food and consumer goods imported into Iraq from a radiological perspective, as the gates will be installed in Basra Governorate at the Umm Qasr Port outlet, and their installation will be completed later in the rest of the governorates and other border crossings," stressing that "special specifications have been chosen." These gates are in line with the approved regulatory standards and are from the best international facilities that are characterized by efficiency and high accuracy in detecting, measuring and investigating radioactive isotopes.”
He continued, "The center has prepared intensive courses for those working to operate these gates at all border crossings."
It is noteworthy that the project to install radiation screening gates at border crossings constitutes an important economic step by enhancing radiation screening capabilities at border crossings and ensuring the protection of citizens and the environment from the risks of radiation exposure to contaminated consumer materials that exceed the approved radiation doses for all citizens.
