    Baghdad today - Diyala
Today, Saturday (May 11, 2024), the village of Al-Khuwailis, one of the oldest villages in Diyala Governorate, witnessed a popular consensus regarding solving the crisis of communications towers that causes the spread of cancer.
The "Baghdad Today" correspondent said, "Diyala Governorate witnessed today a popular consensus regarding resolving the crisis of communications towers, which residents accuse of being behind the recording of more than 40 cases of cancer."
He added, "The people, according to a pledge document, agreed not to renew the contract license for the communications tower, while they demanded that it be moved outside the borders of their village after a week of demonstrations and protests."

Yesterday, Friday, the director of the municipality of Al-Khalis District and a resident of Al-Khuwailis, Marwan Shukr Mahmoud, confirmed to “Baghdad Today” that “the people of Al-Khuwailis organized a protest for the seventh day in a row in front of the cellular communications tower, raising banners that included the names of the 15 victims of cancer who died, while 25 others remain.” They suffer from the tragedy of illness.”
He added, "The residents' only demand is to move two communications towers inside the alleys outside the area because there are concerns that they may be the main reason behind the spread of cancer cases in an area with a population of up to 10,000 people."
Mahmoud pointed out that "the protest stops will remain by the people until their demands to move the towers out of the area are implemented because they are pointing the finger of accusation that they are behind the injuries," pointing out that "the decision is irreversible by the people through their continuous affirmation."
The mayor of Al-Khalis District stated, “The tragedy of the people of Al-Khuwais after deaths were recorded in the past months due to cancerous diseases,” stressing that “the administration is waiting for a detailed report from 4 parties, including health and environment, to show the extent of the influence of the constellations in increasing cancerous diseases.”
He added, "All the demands of the people were literally transferred to the local government of Diyala in order to make the appropriate decisions."
It is noteworthy that demonstrations have been repeated in Diyala Governorate since last year against communications towers, accusing them of being behind the increase in infections in some areas, as similar protests took place in Baqubah District, Al-Mafraq District, and Al-Khalis District, since last year.
Questions arise as to why this belief and accusation is limited to Diyala Governorate, as the matter is widespread in this governorate and not in other governorates, despite the fact that communications towers are spread throughout Iraq.
According to the Ministry of Health data tracked by "Baghdad Today", Diyala Governorate ranks 13th out of 18 governorates in the number of cancer cases, which means that it ranks relatively late.
This dialectic still cannot be resolved. While the competent authorities deny the responsibility of the communications towers and their connection to cancer cases recorded in Diyala, the people insist that the towers are responsible.
