Transportation works to expand ports and increase their depths

The Ministry of Transport intends to initiate a plan to expand the ports and increase their capacity for commercial and tourist traffic in Basra Governorate during the coming years, in conjunction with the steps to complete the large Al-Faw Port project.
Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, Maitham Al-Safi, explained to “Al-Sabah” that a specialized committee from the Ministry and the General Ports Company has begun the steps of preparing studies related to the expansion of the ports, in proportion to the volume of trade exchange and the entry of ships with giant tonnages into them, by increasing depths and recovering sunken vessels and marine vessels. And increasing the areas for exchanging goods, in addition to activating the tourism aspect of the ports after obtaining official approvals to implement the project to transform the port of Al-Maqal into a tourist resort or tourist city, pointing out that there is high coordination with the advisory office of the University of Basra, which is responsible for the process of preparing studies, expansion plans and the capacity of the ports, by concluding Contracts related to implementing these steps as soon as possible.
Al-Safi added that actual expansion measures have been launched in Umm Qasr Port, as new roads were constructed, sewage and rain drainage networks were modernized, and electrical and agricultural works were implemented, in addition to the implementation of infrastructure projects for the northern port of Umm Qasr, which include the construction and expansion of new roads extending from the entrance to the port all the way to the bridge. Al-Qawsi, and modernizing the sewage and rain drainage networks, in addition to planting about a thousand trees distributed among various areas in the port to show it in a way befitting its status and ancient history, pointing to the preparation of an integrated feasibility study to develop the port sector and adopting the latest systems and software to implement electronic management in conjunction with work in the port.
