The Minister of Regional Affairs for Components, Aydin Marouf, announced on Sunday that the components are demanding that they have the right to veto the new session of the Kurdistan Parliament, and that the election law be amended and the quota seats be increased to 15 seats.
Marouf said in a press conference held after a meeting with civil society organizations of national and religious components, “During the meeting, all component activists agreed to hold the elections for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament on the scheduled date with the participation of all political parties and components.”
He added that there were several proposals put forward during this meeting, including the necessity of amending the election law in the new session of the Kurdistan Parliament, increasing the quota seats for the components, and working to make them 15 seats instead of 5 seats, including 11 seats for the ethnic components, and four for the religious components, where they also have a representative in the Kurdistan Parliament. For example, it is important for the Yazidis and Shabak to have their representatives in Parliament.
Last February, the Federal Supreme Court decided to cancel the quota seats in the region’s legislative elections law, and reduce the number of seats in the Kurdistan Parliament from 111 to just 100.
On Wednesday, June 26, the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, issued a regional decree setting October 20, 2024, as the date for holding the Kurdistan Parliament elections.
