The Minister of the Region for Component Affairs in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Aydin Marouf, confirmed today, Thursday, that the five seats allocated to the components are few in number, calling for the number of seats to be returned to what it was previously.
Marouf said in a press conference followed by Mawazine News, "We held a meeting on the components' seats, with a number of political representatives and civil society organizations, relevant from the components (Chaldean, Turkmen, Syriac and Assyrian)."
He added, "We stressed previously that, apart from the small number of seats, the distribution of the components' seats is wrong, and not on geographical grounds, but rather a political division."
He continued, "We are in favor of holding the Kurdistan parliamentary elections on time, and at the same time, all parties must participate in this electoral process, including the components, and the presence and participation of the components in the elections is important."
The Judicial Elections Commission decided to grant the components of the region five seats in the Kurdistan Parliament out of 100 if they compete in the elections.
