    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The State of Law Coalition, led by Nouri al-Maliki, revealed today, Monday (August 12, 2024), the details of the Sunni-Sunni agreement to resolve the issue of electing the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament.
Saad al-Mutalibi, a leader in the coalition, said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "A few days ago, there was a meeting at the home of the leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, which included the Sunni political parties. During this meeting, those parties agreed that one of the Sunni parties would present a candidate for the presidency of parliament in exchange for giving up a ministry to the other Sunni party."
He added, "It was agreed that there would be a complementary meeting to the first meeting on the second day in order for the Sunni parties to present the name of the candidate for one of the ministerial portfolios and for the other Sunni party to present a candidate for the presidency of parliament, but the second meeting did not take place due to an emergency situation for one of the Sunni political forces, according to what it was informed of."
He explained that "Al-Maliki, through his speech, called on the Sunni political forces to resolve the issue of electing the Speaker of Parliament, so that balances are achieved in the three presidencies, and the Sunni component is represented in the presidency of the House of Representatives."
Al-Mutalibi continued: “The absence of one of the Sunni parties from the meeting suggests that this party is not convinced of taking a ministry in exchange for leaving the presidency of the Council of Representatives, and therefore the crisis of electing the Speaker of Parliament is still ongoing, but the meeting at Al-Maliki’s house stirred up the political atmosphere and created a positive atmosphere and overcame many problems.”
The head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, announced today, Monday (August 12, 2024), an agreement to present a candidate for the presidency of parliament in exchange for giving up one of the ministries.
Al-Maliki said in a televised speech regarding the parliament presidency crisis, which was followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the legislative institution has been affected by a problem and is now managed by the first deputy and must be stabilized with a full presidency."
He added, "There is a controversy raised about the desire of the largest component to control the presidency of parliament, and this is not true," stressing that "the Coordination Framework is keen on completing the political process and ending the crisis of the presidency of parliament."
Al-Maliki continued: "We agreed as political parties to present a candidate from one of the Sunni parties in exchange for giving up one of the ministries to the other party," stressing that "the Coordination Framework took the initiative more than once to find a consensus among the Sunni forces regarding the presidency of parliament."
On November 14, 2023, the Federal Court announced the termination of Mohammed al-Halbousi’s membership as deputy and speaker of parliament, while the Sunni blocs have not yet succeeded in deciding the position due to disagreements and lack of consensus, as parliament failed in four attempts to elect a replacement for al-Halbousi in light of Sunni fragmentation and the insistence of the Coordination Framework on a consensus candidate.
